Due to the area being one of the UK's professionally managed National Parks, the nature and wildlife of the area is fully protected and maintained whilst allowing the public to fully enjoy the area recreationally.

In an area which is so rich in scenery and history there is plenty for the family to see and do. The area is full of pretty as a picture towns, farming communities and huge expanses of dales and open air places. This section provides you with some suggestions for making your holiday cottage break in the Yorkshire Dales a memorable one.

If it is outdoor pursuits you are after the area has a huge array of things to keep you occupied such as ambling, bicycling, hiking, potholing and caving. The limestone hills are scattered with multiple potholes, gorges and caves perfect for any enthusiasts and for those looking to get started there are many guides to be found. Underground is another world full of underground rivers and waterfalls as well as massive caverns the size of cathedrals.

Back in the open air why not try out the cycle tracks, bridleways and designated footpaths and with mountain bikes easily chartered and plenty of riding stables there really is no excuse not to get out and enjoy the scenery.

A popular location with ramblers is the Three Peaks in Ribblesdale which are often revered and can test out those of you who are after a more active walking holiday. If it is a more relaxing walk that you would prefer then why not stroll the Pennine Way, the Coast to Coast Path or go to Aysgarth Falls which is surrounded by plenty of hikes. If you are happy to travel a little to go walking then heading to the Lake District National Park can also prove to be breath taking.

If a walking holiday is not what you're after or you'd like to sample other things from your holiday cottage base, there are plenty of other activities for the family to see and do comprising: museums, steam railways, art galleries – the list is endless. A farm visit or a day out at a summer agricultural show will get you to the heart of the ancient way of life.

A trip to the popular Yorkshire coastline is surprisingly easy and with many sandy beaches, cliff faces and harbour towns it can be a great day out for all the family. Alternatively if retail therapy is what you need then a trip to either Manchester or Leeds are both within easy reach.

The world famous Settle to Carlisle railway track passes right through the dales offering one the opportunity to take in the sights in comfort. Another railway attraction for the train enthusiasts is the Darlington Railway museum which houses one of the oldest railway stations in the UK. For a family day out why not try the Castle of Richmond, the four arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct or explore the Forest of Bowland or the Bolton Abbey Estate. You can also find out what life was like for servants at Harewood House's exhibition or reach for the stars with the new planetarium. If you're after something more active then Aerial Extreme in Bedale and Adrenalin North Yorkshire are worth a visit. To explore the culture of the area one can step back in time at the family home of the Bronte sisters at the Parsonage Museum in Haworth.

For more history a trip to Leeds will offer you displays at the Royal Armouries and possibly a real jousting tournament. Alternatively at the Fountains Abbey near to Ripon you can still see the monastic history of its glory.

Skipton which is also known as The Gateway to the Dales, is the home to an amazing castle and a bustling market. The city of York is also well worth a visit with its diverse history of both Roman and Viking you can see both. The Roman walls house the city and its railway museum along with the world renowed York Minster. As well as these two towns it is also worth a trip to the likes of Harrogate with its Hydropathic spa, Barnard Castle with its castle remains and Sedburgh with its narrow main street.
