I booked this cottage through Sykes Cottages. Nice location, excellent accommodation, very nice owner/management. After one evening I unfortunately took a severe asthmatic attack and had to get to a hospital. I wasn't feeling well at all and had to cancel the remainder of the 7 night booking. I only booked as a late booking on the Saturday and took unwell late on Saturday night , on the first night of my arrival. When phoning Sykes on the Sunday they said that whilst they weren't entitled to refund any money whatsover, they would , as an ex-gratia, good will payment, give me back £200 of the £335 paid to them the previous day. This was despite the owner, who also lives on the farm, being willing to take absolutely nothing at all. All I can say is, should you take unwell, Sykes will take no pity on you whatsoever. I contacted the Tourist Board, who said that had the booking been made through them, for one of their similar properties, a £4 charge for admin would have applied. If the booking had been made through the owner, then no charge at all would have applied. My advice, - book directly with Dumbretton Farm on [--], Mrs. Ewing. With my booking, Mrs. Ewing took no payment whatsoever, for the one night that we stayed there, yet Sykes have pocketed £135, for basically two phone calls. That is what I call severe profiteering.
I have just returned from a stay at The Loft and it was a lovely, comfortable stay. The cottage was immaculate and lovely and warm, just what we needed with the wet weather. We had a warm welcome from the owner and there were fresh flowers, milk, biscuits etc on arrival which was a lovely touch. There is a games room with pool table, loads of toys, DVD's etc. The hot tub was clean and perfect for relaxing after a day in the chilly wet weather. Both the games room and hot tub were shared but we never saw anyone else go in them during our stay. Our three year old especially liked being greeted by the three farm dogs in the morning, they were all incredibly chilled out, friendly dogs. The farm is located in a beautiful area and not too far from Annan. We would definitely return here, possibly in the summer months when more of the nearby seasonal places are open. All in all a really pleasant stay.
