Picardy Holiday Cottages
Picardy has 3 Departments, Somme, Aisne and Oise. The heart of the Somme Valley is less than an hour's drive from Calais on the A16 and Beauvais, the capital of Oise, is less than an hour's drive from Paris.
Picardie is a rich and fertile land and there are probably more historic monuments here than in any other region of France. The Picardy Coast is the most unspoilt stretch of coastline in the whole of France. The area boast six splendid cathedrals, churches and abbeys.
The town of Amiens has the largest gothic cathedral in Europs as well as the medieval Quartier St. Leu. There is everything Gothic in Laon, Noyon, Soissons, Beauvais and Senlis with their huge cathedrals. Throughout the area there are many exhibitions and festivals of music, theatre and film. Famous artists such as Sisley, Degas and Seurat painted famous works capturing the enchanting light of this area of France. Picardy is a haven for water sports, cycling, riding, fishing and water sports with a number of leisure parks and facilities for the family.
Chantilly is famous for its lace and the sunny slopes of Aisne grow the grapes which produce the bubbly champagne. The area is quite gastronomic with dishes such as eel, lamb from the salt-flats of the Somme, gateau battu, champagne from the vineyards of the Aisne, foie gras, Maroilles cheese, waterfowl and of course the delicious Chantilly cream!

Jules Verne lived in Amiens (take a horse drawn carriage tour round his town) Enjoy a stroll from your apartment after breakfast in and around Amiens where there are lots of museums housing finds such as sarcophagi, paintings, mosaics and ceramics, inscriptions on stones, jewelleries, decorated potteries and glass works showing the ancient splendour of the city.
In World War I the city suffered heavy damage, and again Amiens suffered greatly during World War II. The city was rebuilt by Piere Dafau who strengthened the existing 18th century plan with boulevards. Today the city has a vibrant economy based on weaving cotton and wool, metal industry, food, footwear and glass.
Picardy is one of the oldest provinces of France, and one of the richest too with the amount of historic sites. Some of the bloodiest fighting in World War I occurred in Picardy, reflected in the melancholy English popular song "Roses of Picardy" (1916) and also in the large number of cemeteries that mark former battlefields in the Somme valley. Picardy was also the scene of bitter fighting in World War II—in May 1940 and August and September 1944.
The old town of Chantilly is famous not just for its magnificent chateau and hunting forest, its lace and Crème Chantilly but also for its wonderful equestrian stables.
