Golf originated in Scotland, golf was played with sticks and pebbles over the natural landscape. King James the second temporarily banned it in 1457 because his army was missing military training, obsessed by the game. The rise of the popularity was helped considerably by the likes of Mary, Queen of Scots, often played with her students, who she called "cadets" which is believed the origin of the word "caddie" came from, the first game was played between England and Scotland.
Today we know about golf from the likes of Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and of course recently Rory McIlroy.
There are many good reason to play golf, as well as being a great form of exercise, it's also therapeutic and many regard it as being a stress reliever (sometimes more so for the spouse because their spouses are out of their hair). Golf allows us to get closer to nature, it can suit all levels of ability - we just have to be honest with ourselves on what level that is.
