Kent is home to some of the oldest and most important cities and towns in the country and is also bordered by Surrey, Greater London, East Sussex and Essex as well as having a theoretical border with France due it having one end of the channel tunnel. With Kent being so well located for accessing many other popular holiday regions and tourist destinations there's plenty to see and do from your cottage in Kent. The area mainly relies upon tourism as its main source of sustenance but there are signs of the agricultural industry it previously had which can still be seen today.

The region is well known for being pivotal in the defence of the country. It is less known that this began in the middle of the 11th century when the ports of Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Dover and Sandwich formed a special pact to protect England on behalf of the king. This had never been as important as during the Second World War when it became Britain's first line of defence.

The region has gone from war to beauty and is home to an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its vast meadows and gently sloping knolls while the Kent Downs cover almost a quarter of the region. This has inspired huge numbers of writers and artists with the most notable of these being Charles Dickens who wrote about locations such as Rochester and Chatham and J M Turner who made use of the stunning views from the coast.

Our self catering properties in Kent give you the opportunity to explore all this while having a comfortable vacation so why not browse our selection of properties in Kent to find your perfect holiday rental amongst picture perfect scenery.

When staying in a holiday rental in Kent there's plenty to see and do, whether you prefer old towns, historical sites or seaside communities there are attractions for everyone no matter what the age of the visitor. Kent is the focal point for much of England's history, with Julius Caesar and William the Conqueror having landed here to invade England. It's no wonder why the area now has such a vast array of amazing forts and grand country homes, many of which are available for you explore during your holiday in Kent.

One of the first places to start in Kent is the atmospheric town of Canterbury. The town has an abundance of sights to see and it's nearly impossible to get around everything in one day. Whilst walking around the town there are many buildings which can be admired as equally for their beauty on the outside as they can on the inside. One of the most famous of these is the Cathedral which draws huge numbers of visitors every year. You can also see St Augustine's Abbey and the Norman Castle Ruins which are definitely worth a visit. The town is full of history and there are many museums that you can have a look through including the Roman Museum. Visitors to the town may also enter the famous Canterbury Tales which was a book written by Chaucer which has been turned into a tourist attraction, which transports you through each of the tales. In order to gain a different view of the town you can take a boat trip along the River Stour and get the best of both worlds with the magnificent architecture and also the stunning nature on the other.

Another of the larger locations worth visiting within Kent is Dover. Well known for its White Cliffs and port, the area is full of history, much of which is still on display today. There are plenty of museums including the Roman Painted house which takes you back over 2000 years, the Dover Museum which shows what local life has been life through the generations and also Dover Castle which is home to a large number of secret underground passages used in the Second World War. You can also take advantage of how close you are to France and take a day trip on the Eurostar through the Euro Tunnel to France.

Royal Tunbridge Wells is a great example of natural parts of Kent. It has an Enchanted Forest and numerous large houses with stunning grounds. One of these includes Chartwell which was the home of Sir Winston Churchill, a visit to the various exhibition rooms is highly recommended. Others include the Hever Castle and Gardens, Emmetts Garden, Ide Hill and Quebec House. Royal Tunbridge Wells is less than 30 miles away from London yet is a peaceful location with excellent surroundings. The once Georgian Spa town boasts brilliant shops and tea rooms along with a place called High Rocks on the edge of the village where you can find distinctive geological formations.

Other places worth visiting in Kent include Maidstone, where you'll find Leeds Castle, Tonbridge, home to Penhurst Place and Gardens, Sissinghurst, where its castle is surrounded by National Trust grounds and also the Grange. For a novel experience why not head to Knole House which with 365 rooms has been named the 'calendar house'. For the kids there's the amazing Diggerland and Howletts which has the world's biggest collection of lowland gorillas.

If you are looking for activities closer to the sea then Kent also has that in abundance. Herne Bay can provide you with all the things you would expect from a British holiday including a wonderful sandy beach, fish and chips, ice cream and cafes. It and other seaside resorts can also offer the chance for activities such as scuba diving, land yachting, surfing, water skiing and kite surfing. In Herne Bay you can also get close to nature with seal colonies.

Also worth a trip to is Whitstable, where you can witness the annual Oyster Festival. The town is also full of unusual shops and galleries such as the Turner Contemporary or Ramsgate which has a long maritime history. Many of our cottages in Kent are located near the coast and offer excellent access to beaches and local coastal attractions.

Kent doesn't necessarily need attractions to encourage guests to come to the area. The country parks with paths surrounded by flora and fauna are a natural attraction for visitors. With an RSPB Nature Reserve in Dungeness as well as gardens such as Goodnestone Park Garden, Mount Eprhaim and Yalding. The area is a great base for those wishing to go rambling during their cottage holiday.

For a more 'historical holiday' you should try Sissinghurst with its castle and gardens, or Dover or Faversham which is a market village that could be just right for you.
