Over the years the storms which have hit this coastline had damaged the cobb, so it was rebuilt in the 1820s using Portland stone. It was also used in the filming of ‘French Lieutenants Woman’.
Lyme Regis takes its name from the river Lym, which winds through the narrow streets.
Lyme Regis is made famous by its Jurassic coastline with four beaches, Bach beach, Church beach, Town beach and Monmouth beach. Some of the beaches have benefited from the seaside protection scheme which means some of the sand and pebbles have been imported.
The Jurassic coastline which spans ninety five miles is a world heritage site, the nearby Lyme Regis cliffs still reveal fossils which date back to prehistoric times including giant Plesiosaur, Ichthyosaur and ammonites.

Seaton is situated between Devon and Dorset, 8 miles from Lyme Regis, the town is built on a higher level due to the flood plain and its pebble beach stretches for one mile.
