About the cottage

Green Lodge is a traditional Lakeland, stone built, cottage dating back to the 1800s and once having housed the local blacksmith and tailor.
It is located in the picturesque village of Eskdale Green in the heart of the Esk Valley.
The pretty, hand painted, bespoke kitchen is well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, electric cooker and microwave.
This leads through to the dining room, again with hand painted dressers, dining table and chairs.
In the cosy sitting room is the TV, video, DVD player and Sky+ recorder. It has a warming coal effect gas fire for instant cheer, settees and chairs.
Running along the south facing length of the cottage is the sunroom which overlooks the most stunning views of the surrounding woodland, fields and mountains. Here you will find comfortable settees, dining table and chairs and TV. This is a wonderful room to sit and spot the wealth of native birds (and the odd red squirrel), that visit the garden .
The natural garden blends into the surrounding countryside with its native shrubs, a stream running through, lawn and patios where you can sit on the garden furniture and enjoy a BBQ.
The cottage sleeps up to 4 adults and comprises one double bedroom and one small twin. The bathroom, situated downstairs, has bath, shower over, WC and washbasin.
There is also a self contained annex for 2 with its own en suite shower room and a comfortable, double bed settee.
The cottage can be let for either 4 or 6 people and is priced according to those numbers
.

The Area

The valley is made up of 3 villages through which the river Esk flows: Ravenglass, Eskdale Green and Boot. Linking these villages is the historic miniature steam passenger railway www.ravenglass-railway.co.uk . You can take the “Ratty” train from outside the cottage, along 7 miles of beautiful scenery, to the coast.
This part of the Lake District is quieter than the more obvious attractions of Windermere and Ambleside and offers a more peaceful Lake District experience. Here farming is the lifeblood of the local community, with acres of rolling sheep filled fields divided by beautiful dry stone walls.

The Village

In the village of Eskdale Green itself you will find a Post Office, the George 1V pub and Eskdale village stores, providing food, clothing and local tourist information. For more historic information, check out the Discover Eskdale centre in St Bega’s Church, which looks at the history of the valley through the ages. From there you can take a stroll through the exotic, recently cleared, Japanese Gardens, created at the end of the 19th century for Lord Rea, a Liverpool shipping magnate.
There are 5 pubs in the valley, all which serve good food and real ale. Eskdale Green has George IV and a little further along is the Bower House Inn set in beautiful gardens overlooking the village cricket grounds. In Upper Eskdale is the Woolpack Inn, which has featured in the Good Beer Guide 2008 and boasts its own microbrewery. In the heart of Boot you will find Brook House Inn which was awarded 4 **** from the AA and an RAC Dining Award. Boot also has Boot Inn with a restaurant and bar and the village even hosts its own beer festival each June.

Walking and Climbing

Eskdale also offers some of the most spectacular fell views and walks in the country where you can discover some of England’s highest peaks, including Scafell Pike, Esk Hause and Bowfell. There are hundreds of charming and challenging walks and climbs right on your doorstep, together with the coastal beauty of the nearby Irish Sea.
Along these walks you can discover the delights of the areas crags, streams, rivers and waterfalls, especially Stanley Ghyll Force, a dramatic 60ft waterfall in a deep gorge…..well worth seeing.
Nearby Boot boasts one of the few remaining working water mills in the country dating back to the mid 16th century and is open to visitors. There is also a gift shop and general store in the village.
Further along towards the beginning of the famous Hard Knott and Wrynose Pass, one of the steepest and most challenging drives in the country which connects Eskdale and the rest of the Lake District, you will find the Roman Fort of Hard Knott. The fort was built between AD120 and AD 138 and provides spectacular views right down to the Irish Sea and Ravenglass.
