Franche Comte Holiday Cottages

Consists of four departments; in the north lies the Haute Saone, mostly a deeply agricultural area, with small towns and villages, low hills and valleys, but rising into the foothills of the Vosges mountains to the east. In the centre of the region, between the Haute-Saône and the Swiss border is the department of the Doubs consisting of a series of plateaux and hilly ridges rising from 200 metres in the north to 1200 metres on the Swiss border.

In the south of the region, the department of the Jura , covers part of the broad flat Saône valley, plus the central part of the Jura mountains, peaking at over 1500 metres on the Swiss border. Finally, in the north of the region lies the smallest of all French departments (except Paris), the territoire de Belfort, an area that was for centuries the French-speaking part of Alsace, making this a perfect a place to stay in one of our French country cottages.
The capital of Franche-Comté is Besançon, a historic city nestling beneath its ancient citadel in a loop formed by the river Doubs.

The Swallow Line; Claimed to be one of the most beautiful railway journeys in France, the Ligne des Hirondelles crosses the Jura, in a trip lasting 2½ hours, travelling between plain and mountain, through the forest of Chaux, the vineyards of Arbois, the vast Grandvaux plateaus, and the Valley of la Bienne.
It boasts a number of very impressive engineering structures.
The Belfort Lion; Born on 2 August 1834 in Colmar, Bartholdi, also the creator of the famous Statue of Liberty, sculpted the Belfort Lion in 1880. This emblematic masterpiece was erected in remembrance of the debt owed to the victims of the siege of 1870-71.
Glass crystal making centre; Creativity and innovation flow freely here, making this Franche-Comté establishment one of the most highly reputed in the world.
The Great Jura Trail; The fittest skiers will be able to use the longest marked route of the range, the Great Jura Trail and its 250 km of pistes with the promise of a full-scale trans-Jura adventure.
Markets of Franche Comte; From the very early hours of the morning, the people of Franche-Comté come out to meet with the traders, setting out their stalls of the finest fresh fruit and vegetables. Their enthusiasm for their gastronomic trade is nothing but contagious. Our guide including restaurants and bars for French gastronomic tourism in one of the famous wine regions of France!
The Chateux de Joux; Built at the entrance to the "Pontarlier Gap", with the Swiss border on the horizon, this proud castle is hard to miss, with its imposing architecture and the mystery that seems to emanate from within. The Château de Joux stands around three hundred feet above the international commercial route which, as early as under Roman occupation, linked the Jura, Burgundy, Flanders and Champagne to Italy.

Arbois
Arbois is the gastronomical and viticultural town par excellence. With its widely renowned wine-growers and food craftsmen, this capital of the "Good Life" offers an unbeatable array of activities and discoveries.
Belfort
In Belfort, art is a tradition which, since its beginning with the Lion by Bartholdi, has never ceased to grow and diversify. The town is adorned with spruce, harmonious colours, that each visitor can discover with the different renovated facades and the colourful flower displays in the public gardens.
Besançon
The heart of the city, nestling in a loop of the River Doubs, offers visitors the charming spectacle of its myriad narrow streets. Besançon has the reputation of the greenest city in France. Today the city centre beats to the rhythm of commerce and craft trades. As the focal point of a conurbation which can boast many a high-tech industry, Besançon has become known around the world as a capital of microtechniques, thanks to the work of the Local Action Committee.
ons -le-Saunier
Lons-le-Saunier was built in the Roman period around a spring of salt water, and its spa tradition and the Enlightenment period have left their stamp on the town. It also offers its visitors a different way of life, with its picturesque little squares and its Museums of Fine Art and Archaeology, and it is also the ideal starting point for many an excursion.
Montbéliard
Montbéliard has preserved the charm that is so unique to the lovely cities of the Württemberg Empire. The castle which dominates the city is home to some of the finest reminders of this past. Montbéliard also boasts a hugely diverse cultural scene, with particular focus on street theatre.
