Charente & Vendee Holiday Cottages
This area of France has a rich variety of attractions for the holidaymaker. With 100 miles of sandy beaches as well as towns and villages plus vineyards and of course the home of Cognac and the local speciality Pineau. If you are holidaying with your children, after a wonderful night’s sleep in your apartment, you can all visit the splendid theme parks such as le Puy du Fou or Futuroscope, as well as the region’s idyllic islands. La Rochelle is the “capital” city of the Vendee region, famous for its harbour and delightful old town. Travelling from the UK is so simple, with easy access from the southern channel ports, it is a popular destination for British holidaymakers seeking a sun, sea and sand holiday. However, the area also has fortified cities, wetlands, islands and some excellent vineyards to visit.

La Rochelle the capital with a most delightful harbour and town. The city is connected to the island of Ile de Re by a 2.9 km (1.8 mi) bridge completed on 19 May 1988. Its harbour opens into a protected strait called the Pertuis d’Antioche
Ile de Re is Unesco-protected, attracting wealthy Parisians and British holidaymakers, and St Martin, the capital, has restaurants and boutiques that rival Paris or Nice. Its former citadel is home to France’s largest correctional facility, and until 1938 was the departure point for convicts bound for the French penal colonies. The island can be reached from La Rochelle by air or train. The impressive road bridge to Ile de Ré. Was built 22 years ago, the bridge made access to the island much easier.
After enjoying breakfast in your beautiful holiday home, browse the expensive boutiques, the large food market and stop at the main square to watch a game of boules. Continue on to watch the small trawlers and oyster boats bobbing on the light swell and planning a cycle ride the next morning. Ile de Ré might have been designed for the bicycle as it is totally flat with not a hill in sight – and has more than 60 miles of designated cycle lanes. Catch sight of the island’s woolly donkeys, best known for the silly culottes they wore in the days they pulled salt wagons. In nearby La Flotte, a picturesque port said to be one of the most beautiful villages in France we explored the streets and markets. Cutting across the island to Les Portes-En-Ré explore the village’s church and then relax on the beach after lunch. Stroll from your holiday home down the little streets to the excellent Musée Ernest Cognacq to learn more about the island’s heritage, and St Martin in particular
